2015 · Site-specific performance · Bold Tendencies, Peckham, London · Robin Linde Productions
Writers were commissioned to write a new monologue in response to a character from Sophocles. The results were performed on the sixth floor of a multi-storey car park in Peckham.
Electra, Creon, Deianira and Oedipus were the starting points, but nobody was asked to adapt anything. The writers answered back, and they answered from wherever they happened to be standing. Matt Cunningham, who was teaching at the time, recognised Creon in the paperwork teachers have to fill in: well-meaning rules that end up trapping the person who made them. He wrote his piece in the same loose iambic pentameter as the translation he was working from, which is a set of rules too. Lucy Shaw arrived at Electra by way of a Temple of Artemis she had visited in Turkey that year. Jodi Gray walked past Deianira altogether and wrote for Iole, the woman Sophocles leaves silent.
